Hello,
This is the first time I have posted on here. I am an avid reader of the threads on thorntree and see how helpful people can be so I thought I would ask for some advice regarding my upcoming trip!
I am planning a 10 week (66 days in all) trip to Europe over winter. I am a 22 year old female from Australia flying to Amsterdam on 13th December and flying home from Helsinki 16th February. I made my flights open-jaw that way so I would be forced to visit Scandinavia as I know it is all too easy to miss it. The only places I have been in Europe are Ireland and England so I am very excited about this trip! I have already planned out the first few weeks: I will spend a couple of days in Amsterdam after I first arrive, then I will travel to Dusseldorf and Cologne by train to see the Christmas markets, then I will fly to Paris and spend about 5 days there, then I will fly to Exeter to spend a week (including Christmas) with family, then fly to Belfast to spend New Year's with friends, then fly back to The Netherlands. I have many relatives and friends in The Netherlands, and I have also been learning Dutch, so I plan to spend about 2-3 weeks there. I then want to go to Antwerp, Brugges and Brussels in Belgium, then go across to Vienna in Austria, then Prague (and maybe Cesky Krumlo) in the Czech Republic, then Krakow (and Auschwitz) in Poland, then Berlin. In all of these cities mentioned, I will be staying only about 2 days in each.
Now, this is the hard part. After I see all of these places, I will have about 3 weeks left, and obviously some of that will be spent in Finland. I think I will probably spend a week there so I can spend time in the North and have a sledding experience, as well as in Helsinki. However, I am not sure whether I should spend that 2 weeks in between in the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) and Belarus, or whether I should go up to Copenhagen, Iceland, and Norway before heading to Finland. I have a feeling the first option may be cheaper...I am on a very tight budget, but I am banking on saving a lot by staying with friends and relatives for about 3-4 weeks of my trip.
Considering I am on a tight budget, and that I will be travelling in Winter (Dec-Feb), does anyone have any advice on where I should spend my time? Also, I have a feeling I may be biting off more than I can chew in one trip...but it is so hard to narrow things down!!
Thank you for your time,
Heather.
