Hello dear LP'ers!

Since some months I started blogging, but it doesn't seem to be a great succes. After trying to make some improvements, and connect to social networks and etc, I still don't catch too many visitors.

I was wondering if maybe you see something that can improve the blog, that I am missing?
Or is it the writing style?

I'd love to know what you are thinking, and would be very grateful for your critiques :)

Also is the blogsherpa program from LP still open? Or can I submit my blog somewhere?

Many thanks in advance,

Melisande

Hi Mel,

I just had a look at your blog. I think you've had some pretty interesting adventures but here are some points that may explain why it's not as popular as you'd like:

  1. You can tell just by looking at the front page that your first language isn't English. While I congratulate you on being so fluent in a second language (you should see me try to write in German), your sentences don't flow like they would for a native speaker. You may already do this, but maybe try and write the blog entry in your native language (French?) and then see how it differs to one you would have written in English.

  2. There's not enough humor to to keep people interested. In a blog you need to get people emotionally involved or get them to laugh. At minimum to crack a smile. Your blog, while very factual, doesn't keep people entertained. The entries I read were actually quite depressing. People like reading about awesome places, not 'wow this place is so dirty and has so many poor people, beggers, orphans and abandoned children, it really sucks."

  3. The tone of your blog kind of comes off as 'I'm an expert. I know the answers'. For a lot of people, travel is about learning. Try and describe the situation and how you felt about it, rather than how you think you can fix it.

These are just some ideas and of course feel free to delete this comment and not give it a second thought. My biggest tip however would be to treat it more as a travel diary and once you've really found your voice, promote yourself to readers. At the end of the day, you'll have it as a memory when you finish your travels (if you ever do), and you'll find that's the biggest benefit of travel blogging.

Disclaimer: I am not a travel blogging professional. There are books and websites dedicated to help you improve your travel blogging skills, authored by experts in the field. I am not one of them. I hope you have an amazing trip and that your blogging improves each time you write a new post. Good luck!

These are really good points actually - and I appreciate your effort to analyze it so extensively greatly!

I might not follow through on your first point because I feel writing in English is a good way to keep my English in shape. The other two however are things I didn't really notice before - so those are definitely pointers I'll keep in mind!

Might have to put in an extra effort for the humor, I find it hard to translate that feeling in written.

And you are absolutely right when you say the best thing about travel blogging is that you have it as something to look back to

Thank you, and enjoy travelling yourself :)
