How To Travel Safe In Mexico

Interest forums / Travel Bloggers and Pathfinders

I just wanted to let everyone know that I recently had a really great guest writer post on my blog about tips for travelling safe in Mexico. I havn't been to Mexico, but I think her post is really helpful.

The blog post would be more helpful if it provided readers with more details, and also if it were based on more experience in Mexico than "Our Oyster's" guest blogger Alex has had. The good news is that Alex has actually been to Mexico. (Many who post about safety there have not.) Also, she successfully conveys to readers the fact that wide geographical variations exist in Mexico today regarding safety, due to the drug war.

Part of the bad news is that Alex overgeneralizes, making vague hyperbolic statements such as:

"Half of Mexico is very safe (southern part), and the other half extremely dangerous."

And, her hysterically phrased advise about the potential hazards of "choosing a taxi" is not pertinent to most Mexican towns and cities. Many other cities and towns have not experienced the extensive taxi related crime that Mexico City has suffered. Contrary to Alex's claims, even in Mexico City, most taxi customers are not assaulted and robbed.

I find the blog's photo that is captioned "safe taxi' humorous. Does Alex have psychic powers enabling her to determine from it's appearance going down a Mexico City avenue just how safe a particular taxi is?

Agree with chris, the article is poorly composed and rather worthless. About the only worthwhile comment is to not show off a lot of pricey things, a tip that is good but is also common sense.

Buen viaje!

And, the thread descends to commercial spam ,by the sponsors, in the responses...carracar

But wait, the author says that she ". . .is a crazy girl who made travel the reason of her life. ”I live to travel, I travel to live” is her motto. She writes about her crazy travel, fun adventures and sexy photos. . . ." She must be serious and knowledgeable.

Not any useful information that I see. And you may be correct, carracar.

It's a blog entry by someone who probably shouldn't be expected to be providing professional journalist work product. Not a report appearing in the NY Times. The content isn't all that different than some of the postings we read here on TTMB or in the myriad of Mexico-specific blogs you can find easily on the www. Her commentary is certainly better than anything #3, or #4 post on TTMB. Some readers will take from the story what they find useful and discard the rest. No different than how things work around here or elsewhere.

Her most ridiculous comment is the statement that the northern part of Mexico is 'extremely dangerous.' 'Extremely dangerous' for whom? Maybe for the drug gangs, but not for your typical tourists. If it were we would be reading about new killings every day. We're not. According to the U.S. government the biggest danger to Americans in Mexico is from road accidents, not drug cartels, and the amount of road accidents falls way short of fitting the description of 'extremely dangerous.'

Buen viaje!
