It depends if you're purely wanting to document your trip for your friends or if you want to write for a wider audience and monetize it down the track.
If you just want somewhere to easily put up some notes and pictures Travelpod, Blogger and Wordpress.com are perfectly good solutions.
If you want to monetize and some point, you need to get your own hosting and domain, which is quite a bit more complicated.
