Are Instagram Influencers Overrated / Bloggers Underrated?

Interest forums / Travel Bloggers and Pathfinders

Why is it that Instagrammers get so many more opportunities and more money than bloggers these days?

I'm not complaining; I'm asking for explanations and, more importantly, looking for solutions.

According to a quick calculation I did, a blog post that gets just 500 views a month generates the same amount of attention as an Instagram post on an account with 100,000 followers. Going rates for such an Instagram post is about $1,000. But for a such a blog post... roughly $0. (You can see the post on it here.)

What's wrong with my logic? (...I'm sure there's plenty.)

And how can we advocate the value of blogs?

If you have any thoughts or ideas on the topic, pro or con, please share.

Thanks,

Chris

Your calculations are probably correct but you are putting too much emphasis on time and no emphasis on number of unique viewers. If I'm trying to advertise something I want as many people as possible to see it, on the assumption only a small percent are going to buy that product. I don't care about how much time they spend on it. Instagram is completely shallow, but it's just there to grab attention and direct those interested in towards further research,/websites/companies.

Also, there are opportunities for bloggers to make money, some are very successful. So I wouldn't say they are completely undervalued. If you are looking to be a business your best bet would be to combine the two.

I agree that this analysis is too focused on time and that all that matters at the end of the day is getting viewers into brands' funnels. But more viewers doesn't necessarily mean more potential business. It has to be the right audience. The more targeted the audience, the better, and blogs are undoubtedly more targeted. So maybe a more accurate comparative analysis would somehow dig into the sponsored Instagram post and try to suss out how many actual, targeted, impressions were made.
