Hello my fine TT friends,

I'm in the midst of trying to move our last few belongings from Toronto to London. I've never done an overseas move before so I have no idea what to ask other than "how much?". Any tips from those of you out there who have done an overseas move would be greatly appreciated. Or any reference sites, books, checklists etc.

I've seen people reference expat forums but a google search has tuned up lots but none that I can easily find for Canadians - any suggestings.

I'd of…

Came across this insightful story on the "emerging adults." Travel is highlighted as one of the avenues of escape for 20-somethings. Would be interesting to hear the views of fellow TT-ers.

Hello everyone

I have a few questions about the above. Hopefully I can get some answers and/or reassurances about them.

I get my BA next year and will then do a CELTA course during the Summer. My girlfriend and I then plan to move to Asia (Thailand, China, Indonesia, Nepal, wherever really) on a long-term basis. We have both travelled extensively in Asia before so my question isn't necessarily about adapting to local life.

My girlfriend - though Finnish - has superb command of English. She…

Wow -- it's been a LONG time since I've been on this forum.

I figured this was the best place to ask about a great fantasy of mine that probably won't happen. But hey, one can always dream....

If my wife and I were to pack up from our rat race lives in Hong Kong and take a break for one year, where would be the best place in the world to go that meets the following criteria:

-attractive (preferably tropical -- a beach is pretty much a must)
-safe
-cheap
-has international schooling (we have a…

Hi all,

I have an opportunity to apply for up to three placements with and NGO for up to 12 months next year. Unfortunately I cannot decide on my third application. One of the choices involves living in Phnom Penh. While I'm excited about the work/organisation, I know little about Cambodia. I've tried searching TT but most reports on Cambodia seem to be be for short trips, backpacking style etc.

I'd love to hear from anyone that has lived in the city. Some key questions are:

  • is the…

Hello All -
Hoping someone can help me with this (and apologizing in advance for the long post!)
I have been offered (after almost 2 months of interviewing!) a dream job with a very well-regarded international NGO. The posting is in Rwanda and I will be bringing along my husband (who is on sabbatical) and two small children. I received an informal invitation to the position last Friday and am currently awaiting for my official offer letter from HR.
Now here's the sticky part. Even though I went…

Dear all,

We are looking for a 4x4 vehicle in good condition. We live and work in Livingstone and want to use it for trips into the national parks. Safari equipment would be a bonus, as well as Toyota.

Greetings Bas and Suzanne

Hi. I'm new here.
I have decided I want to teach english abroad. I'm a 25 year-old female from the US. I have a bachelor's in English and will shortly have my Master's in History. I plan to get CELTA certification. I also have cerebral palsy. My cerebral palsy is not severe but I am unable to walk without assistance. I use a manual wheelchair for long distances and quad canes any other time. My question, as much as I fear asking it, is, will I be able to teach english abroad?
I have been to…

Hi,

Unfortunately this isn't as good as the title sounds, nor is it a scam. I thought I'd just share some info regarding getting the most out of your money and tax paid as a means to help travelling and possibly to encourage people to quit their jobs and go travelling now :)

This applies to people in the UK (or any other country with a similar tax system where the tax year begins in April time).

Assuming an average salary of around £20,000 per year the best time of year to claim a tax refund…
