I am considering which direction to travel, East to West or West to East, across Europe and Asia. I would very much like to work once in a while for accommodations or meals or actual money (of course) as I progress. I am a US citizen with a US passport.

Would it be easier for a US citizen to work in:

SE Asia/China/India during the summer and Eastern Europe during the winter/spring?

OR

Eastern Europe in the summer and SE Asia/China/India in the winter/spring?

OR

Should I give up these wishes of working because I am a US citizen?

Thank you for any input on my question!

Why only for a summer?

And what piece of history most fascinates you?

It is NOT easy for a US passport holder to live and work legally in any country other than the US.

What sort of job skills do you have that would make an employer willing to go through the process of obtaining you a work permit?

If you are under 30 than take a look at some of the BUNAC opportunities. If not, forget about working your way around the world.

everbrite is absolutely right. Working while travelling holds this mythical place in the imagination but the reality is that it is rather difficult. In many cases the hassles and the time required to do it should rule it out as an option, especially if your trip is so short as to only last a season, except for a small number of tourist magnets in high season.

Now if your plans are for the longer term, you, yes even Americans, can settle down for two years or so and work teaching English in a number of countries.

If you are a U.S. citizen, it looks like yes. You should give up the dream of having employment.

Blessed is he, who can make his own job.

And overseas you would only make barely survival money.
And those yanks who only want a cameo appearance on a foreign job,
screw it up for the next guy.

Why have a ditto mark on your grave. Live life your way.

Go see the world. Bp 1st. Work when you can get it. Anything legal.
Its how I saw Oz and learned more about me.

I'll be forever grateful.

English teachers can get work and visas abroad nearly everywhere. even the EU. If you're looking at short term jobs, look here http://tefltips.blogspot.com/2008/05/working-holiday-visas-and-short-term.html
