my boyfriend and i are both Irish citizens (I also hold a UK passport), and we are looking to go abroad for a year to live and work, but we're not sure where to go. Ideally we would like to go to the US or Oz, but because of visa restrictions are unable. I work as a secretary and he works as a chef, but we'd be happy to do (almost!) any job to cover our expenses, such as bar work etc.

We're both mid-20s, enjoy going out and meeting new people, but unfortunately we dont speak any languages other than english (although I'm attempting to learn Spanish). We both love Europe but would prefer to go somewhere a bit more far flung for now. I'd be happy to go to Canada, but i think he's got his heart set on somewhere sunny, and we're planning on setting off around October.

Just wondering if anyone could help us out by making some suggestions?!

What countries can you get a WHV for? That's obviously the best way to start looking at possible places. For Canada you would need to go through Bunac.

Would we?! I thought it was just the US that Irish citizens needed to go through BUNAC for...

I found a list of countries that offer WHVs to Irish citizens: Australia (which is out), NZ (I haven't been, but my boyfriend has and although he liked it there I don't think he'd be up for staying a year), Hong Kong, Japan and Canada. It was just a random list I got off the internet, so I'm not sure how up-to-date or accurate it is.

why not look into Southern Europe - in my opinion it is definitely way more exciting to live there then in the US ( and it's warm)

Which part of Ireland. If you are in the EU consider Spain or any of those southern EU countries.

How come you can't get a visa for OZ? I know many irish people over here...

We've both already gone over on WHVs. I could go again on my other passport, but he'd be stuck. He was thinking of going over as a skilled worker, but probably won't be able to because he's been unemployed for large chunks of the last year...

Ah right, that's a bummer.

There is some shortage of chefs in Australia at the moment. Why doesn't he apply for skilled worker as a chef, and you apply for a WHV on your Brit passport?

I don't think you will be able to get another WHV with your british passport. Once you've had one WHV to Australia that's it. I remember watching border security and an Irish guy was trying to get in with a second passport after he'd already had one WHV and he was denied entry and sent home.
