I would like to volunteer with an organisation that's involved with Burmese refugees in Thailand.
Unfortunatly I'll only have about 5 months, starting februari 2011.
For the past 2 years I've been working as a social worker for an ngo in a refugee centre in Holland. This centre houses refugees that have been resettled by the UNHCR. A lot of these people came from several camps along the thai/burma border, mainly Karen from mae la camp near mae sot.
My main tasks here are supporting refugees in the proces of family reunification and helping them to find there way in the Dutch bureaucracy. I also do a bit of research and communication for this ngo and have coordinated a cultural and language excange project (in which i brought locals and refugees together in order to make the integration proces more smooth). So eventhough I do not have any specific skills to offer (i.e. i'm not a doctor or a teacher) I do have a little experience working with burmese refugees and know a thing or two about the situation.
I'm very flexible and willing to help where ever help is needed. For example I could help doing research, coordinating volunteers, international communication, raising awareness, help to set up or execute different projects. I see a lot of organisations asking for volunteers to teach english. I wouldn't mind doing so but it shouldn't be my main occupation as I'm not a teacher nor a native speaker. Besides, I feel like these volunteering options are designed more to satisfy the needs of the volunteer then those of the 'locals'.
I'm very aware that my volunteering there will be of more benefit to myself (experience) then to the organisation or the refugees. I do not aim to solve the problems and change the world. But if I could actually be of a litlle help to anyone that would be wonderful.
I've heard about the Burma Volunteer Programme; If you have experience with them I would love to hear about it. If you know any other oganisation that works with/for Burmese refugees anywhere along the Thai border (I prefer smaller ngo's) please let me know.
Appreciate it!
Tom
