Hi,
I have a New Zealand friend who is planning on working in Australia. However, he has various criminal convictions that, he has been told may prevent him from being allowed in australia at all.
Does anyone know who we call to find out if he'd be allowed in? Is there a filter system like this? I have heard of people being sent back upon arrival due to previous convictions, so we want to know beforehand to prevent any embarrassment.
Thanks
Tiny :)

This is for an ETA, so not fo NZers, but i would assume the conditions would be similar. As above, ring them up to confirm.

You must comply with your ETA conditions while in Australia. A breach of these conditions may result in your ETA being cancelled and you may have to leave Australia.
You must be free from tuberculosis at the time of travel to, and entry into, Australia.
You must not have any criminal convictions, for which the sentence or sentences (whether served or not) are for a total period of 12 months duration or more, at the time of travel to, and entry into, Australia.
Criminal convictions
If you have had any criminal convictions in any country, you may wish to consider applying for a Tourist visa (subclass 676), rather than an ETA. If arriving on an ETA with criminal convictions, you could be refused entry into Australia

Did you watch Border Security on Monday night?? A kiwi guy got a work visa turned down by Australian authorities because of a past conviction. He was able to enter as a visitor but not able to work. One thing he was able to go to Immigration in W.A and argue his case.

Well, sounds like a bit of a pickle.... but I know how that feels.
I moved from new zealand to australia 2 years ago, and I had a criminal record.
what helped me was the fact it was one time, and I had worked off all my community service. Plus, I was born in australia (I'm not an australian citizen because I wasnt in australia on my 10th birthday) and my father lives here.
What I ended up doing was getting a copy of my criminal record from the court house, sending it off to brisbane with the right form... and then 2 months later I called them up. Got told I was given an SCV (special condition visa. issued to all new zealanders electronicly).
I left 4 weeks later. and now enjoy nearly 100% better pay!
tell your friend to hit up the immigration website.
