I'm currently doing a Master and will finish this in about a year - after that it is time for my leap year - I hope that I've saved enough by that time to be able to survive for a year without having to work - but ...

the plan is slowly created in my head and what I would realy like to do is go to Italy for a year to:
1. Learn to speak the language properly
2. Learn how to cook fantastic traditional italian food
3. Learn how to maintain classic cars (I would love to learn a trade where I can combine my love for cars with a desire to create with my hands)

The first two are not the real issue, but as for #3 I am looking for some help on where to start.

I've been to the Mille Miglia (MM) for the past 3 years and would one day like to be one of the participants - but for now the easier option would be to squeeze myself into passenger seat of a support car. The plan woudl be to find a garage that maintains cars of MM drivers and that send a support car when the race is on.

What I am looking for is apprenticeship / traineeship for a longer period of time (without being payed for it) just to gain experience on maintenance and hopefully come along for the ride as supporting crew the end.

Any ideas on where to find a garage that maintains and/or sells MM cars and would be willing to give me this opportunity?
Thanks in advance,
Eve

Priority is not eating and sqeezing, in the food wallowing capitol?

As for the apprentice dream; Follow it. Our own inner goals are the life fulfilling ones. Screw family presure to do family trade etc. Or Daddy's wish.

First is learning lingo and settling in the lifestyle. Then comes the best part. Making friends and learning all kindsa stuff. Don't take much with you. I brought lots with me to Spain from Texas. 80% import duty.
And I've almost never used any of it.
Except research books.

Been here 8 years. /Its yesterday stuff. en la pasada.
Try to find an Engilish / Spanish Dictionary, with instructions in English. omg!

That's a given isn't it ;-)

Thanks for the tip - I will not take more than my little Fiat can contain - that's just about a toothbrush and 2 pairs of underwear and socks ...

First things first, do you hold a passport from an EU country? If you do then that won't be a hurdle. If you don't then worry about that first.

Next, try asking on expat forums in Italy and on car forums. Learn enough Italian so you can start to look at Italian forums. Get a list of participants in last years Mille Miglia or contact the organiziers and ask them for leads and suggestions.

Ask on the Italian branch here on the TT.

Good luck and do report back what worked best.
