Thinking of doing TEFL?

Interest forums / The Long Haul - Living & Working Abroad

I have been TEFLing for almost 25 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. For those people who are considering a job/career in TEFL, I have written some pages which I hope will be useful. Perhaps best to start with New to TEFL and take it from there. I hope you get as much pleasure out of TEFL as I have. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

An excellent website for people thinking about teaching English abroad is over at: TEFL Daddy dot com . It is - essentially - a 94 page FAQ of all the questions people tend to ask when thinking about a few years overseas - working, saving money, requirements, how to do it - etc.

94 pages of FAQs???? Good lord. Do we have that many indecisive people in the world??

No, I think people just want to be well informed.

Everyone is not the same, thus many people have many different kinds of questions. Some people want to know how much they can save, others want to know what a typical day is like and on and on . . . fair enough.

Is it much harder to find a job abroad that pays well if they have only done a 4 week course and haven't done a PGCE?

As much as I love my PGCE in TEFL, I think most language schools do not know what one is and would most likely see it as being a regular TEFL Cert or perhaps a step up from the basics.

A British curriculum based international school would likely give more credence to a PGCE as they would be more familiar with it, but otherwise I am not sure that it is a very well known credential. Just my opinion.
