Can anyone recommend any books for somebody new to the world of TEFL. I will be doing a course early next year but would like to have done some research before this. Are there any 'must-have' books that really helped you along the way?

Thanks

I like Tasks for Teacher Education by Tanner and Green. It has a nice inductive approach to many different teaching themes and is very practical. It's often used for in-service teacher training.

Teaching by Principle and Principles of Language Learning and Teaching, both by H. Douglas Brown are more academic and include more about the theory of language teaching. They are often used as university teacher training textbooks.

The Teaching English as a Foreign Language book from the Teach Yourself range of books is very good for helping you with your studies/pre-reading.

Are you American or English as the grammar differs, and therefore the books?

Micheal Swan's Practical English Usage is a teachers bible, and any of the Grammar in Use Series (Practical, or Essential) by Raymond Murphy but get the newest ones with exercises, answers and the CD-ROM you can then make up grammar execises for the class.

Read TEFL Bootcamp's webpage its essentially an online TEFL training course, would be excellent preparation for your course. If you wnat to brush up on your grammar before you start UCL have produced an online Internet English Grammar with exercises etc.

I have a long list of websites for the training & theory and a a longer list of good websites for resources (flashcards, lesson plans, etc) if you are interested.

Thanks for the advice, I had already put the Teach Yourself book on my wishlist at amazon so might go ahead and get that one. Will look into the rest. If its not too much trouble I would appreciate the list of websites you have.

Thanks

'Learning Teaching' by Jim Scrivener and 'The Practice of English Language Teaching' by Jeremy Harmer are usually found on very teacher's bookshelf- you'd be doing yourself a major disservice if you DON'T have them!

Where are you planning on teaching?

I found Longman English Grammar really useful and not too heavy going. It covers British English, if that's what you need.

Harmer, Scriver and Swan all mentioned above are essential. If you want to improve your grammar knowledge then I suggest working through some of the books by Azar or Murphy.
