I just got back from a year in South Korea teaching English, do I have to pay the government tax for the money I earned in SK? My tax form has no box that says I don't and it works out to be 4 grand I owe. How do I get around this?

I'm a kiwi and I had this exact same question so I wrote an email to the ird a year or two ago. Here's what they had to say:

Quote

As a non resident you can earn what ever overseas amount of money you like, you do not have to
declare your worldwide income in New Zealand you can send money back to New Zealand, any amount you
like, and if you return to New Zealand as a resident your interest will be taxed at the resident
rate again.

I can't remember exactly what a non resident is so you'll have to check the ird website but if I remember correctly then it's someone who spends less than 180 days in NZ in any given tax year (or something similar to that).
Double check to be sure though.
