Hi All.
I'm finishing up my last semester of a Masters of Social Work degree (mental health specialization) at Univeristy of Toronto in Ontario Canada and am looking for employment overseas. I was thinking of working in the UK as a starting point then seeing what else is out there. I'm also interested in working with indigenous people, specifically those in NZ, OZ or the islands there abouts. I have extensive experience with Inuit/First Nations in Canada.

Can anyone point me in the right direction re: job banks, government web sites? I'm 31 so I wouldn't qualify for SWAP, or anyother youth/student program.

Thanks

(x-posted on OZ branch)

I used to have a lot of sites that work as "clearinghouses" bookmarked, but let them go a while back.
You can do google searches to find sites like that for social work/ mental health positions abroad. Another way to locate possibilities is to go directly to websites for the large organizations that work internationally, and that you have an interest in, and locate job possibilities... humanitarian work, human rights issues.

They often want to see some years of post-masters experience, and experience living abroad or bilingual abilities are a plus. Good luck

As far as working with indigenous people in remote areas of Australia or the Pacific, your best option may be through a Volunteer organisation, such as VSO (or whatever the Canadian equivalent of the Peace Corps is. Also, in Australia, try the state government health departments (we have an American Social Worker working with Health in a rural NSW community where I work, with a large Aboriginal population.)
As for the Pacific Islands, unless you get a job with a charity such as Oxfam or Save the Children, there are (unfortunately) few jobs for social workers, as the govenrments haven't caught up with the need yet.
(I worked in the area as a self-funded volunteer in Solomon Islands for a year recently.)

Ask me about the Island Builders of the Pacific.
