Hi guys,

My husband and I will be backpacking in Auz from mid Jan - March 2013. We've planned around 6 weeks up the east coast and 4 weeks working somewhere along the way (farm/fruit picking etc)

Trouble is I know that so many fellow Irish have emmigrated and heard that work is near impossible to find there now. Is anyone over there at the moment, what are the chances of getting work during this time?

Is that 4 weeks part of your overall 6 weeks or separate?

If it's separate, that's cool, but if not you aren't going to be seeing very much in 2 weeks!

The 4 weeks are separate. But they could be a long 4 weeks burning money and twidling our tumbs if we cant find work.

Are you going on the WHV or just going as a tourist and trying to work for cash? I found work very easy to find in Aus, and never had a problem, but I also had the luxury of time to find what I really wanted. You will have to keep your eyes peeled on bulletin boards and at hostels for cash paid work. You can find cash jobs, and I know it's out there, but it will be harder to find... in my opinion.

As well, there are hostels in rural areas that specifically cater to backpackers who stay there to work at the farms. They help you find work and offer rides to work. That is your best bet. Call or email around to those places and see if they know or have any farms that pay cash.

I was in Luxton in SA and they got me a job picking grapes for cash.

Good luck, and don't forget sunscreen.

We're going on a WHV (already bought!)

I've done some reading on fruit picking today and have come to the conclusion that there seems to be alot of farms around shepparton and that area. (Or anywhere in Victoria would suit us).

I've read horror stories of working hostels overcharging and farmeres under paying in some places!

Has anyone been to this area and can they recommend any good farms/hostels? We don't care how remote we are,it's all about earning as much in the time we have!

What would be the easiest fruit to pick? I heard grapes were ok but dont pay that well?

Finally when is the best time to start looking for Jan 2013? before we arriive or play by ear when we land in the country?

Cheers guys!

We found it hard in 1988 to find work, so don't know if that has improved? You will see if you consult Google that western OZ is better for employment right now!
PS. Everything a lonnnng way from anything else before you get a job at a mine!
