I've been living on Roatan, Honduras for 12 years and would like to start looking into a new spot to call home at some point in the next few years. I'm Canadian and am on my own with two boys, 6 & 8, and the school system's not great here, and crime has been increasing a lot, so looking for somewhere tropical with decent schooling and not too much crime. I'm currently managing reservations and guest services at a boutique resort, and would love to find something similar elsewhere (originally came here while I was traveling around teaching scuba diving, but stopped doing that quite awhile ago).
I'd prefer not to be too far from Canada, so maybe somewhere else in the Caribbean. Speak fluent Spanish and French.
Suggestions anyone?

Yeah. Why limit yourself the the Americas? Canada will be there. And you can always get back.

Yucatan in Mexico is a great place. So far unscathed by the violence that is raging in many parts of the country. Merida is a beautiful colonial town. Standards of living are good. But be prepared for the heat.

Wouldn't it be easier to do your homework first, instead of us doing it for you?

gawkbout- why limit? Because I have two young boys that I need to buy plane tickets for when we go to Canada for a visit, and would like them to see their grandparents/aunts/uncles/cousins at least every couple years, if we're closer (rather than say south pacific), more chance of visitors, and not as expensive to get back for a visit

travelinhobo- much easier to ask people that have been someplace and can relate their firsthand experience when they know what I'm looking for, internet searching isn't always that fruitful. I've been trying but would rather have a few suggestions that might be good to make a more directed search.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check into them. Interesting that no one listed any place eastern Caribbean, I was thinking one of the islands that's a bit wealthier and has to a European country might have better schooling.

Well i'm a Scot living in Punta Gorda town in the south of Belize, and it is a small, very friendly and safe town and great for bringing up young kids. There is a scuba operation, Reef CI that works of the coast of PG town/Toledo district that may be looking for a dive master, and there are also a few resorts/lodges around that may have need for your skills.
