Hello all. My husband and I are planning to leave the US and in all honesty, we never want to come back. My husband has four degrees - two masters (sociology and natural resource management) and two bachelor's (zoology and physiology). He is currently working on his Sociology PhD but is thinking of dropping the program to go to nursing school. He can get his accelerated BSN and test for an RN cert in 26 months. I find it crazy that he has to do this and cannot support us with his advanced degrees overseas. (this is what all the information we have been looking at tells us.) I have an AA and lots of experience in accounting and administration but no advanced degree. We want to start out in New Zealand or Australia and move on from there as we learn more languages and possibly supplement with ESL in more foreign countries because he cannot do nursing if he doesn't know the language. Does anyone have any advice on degrees that will take you around the world? Is nursing really one of the best options? We would just backpack it and to hell with having good income but we already have one child and would like to have one more, therefore we need to maintain a stable base. Just curious to see if anyone has any insight, advice, etc. Mostly I am just bored and tired of where we are and anxious to leave but the nursing program means another two years here in the states. Looking forward to any advice...

nursing will get u a job in south africa, new zealand, UK (with extra few months conversion course) ireland australia, canada and any of the arab states. europe is out without apprpriate passport, so yes it can be done but in OZ it is crap wages NZ not much better. I would have though that finance degrees would have opened all doors.

US and Canadian nursing training is different than that in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia. Nurses from those coutnries cannot work in the US or Canada without extra training. I don't know what the situation is in reverse, but I'd check it out before committing to additional training. These countries may also require a certain amount of experience in additon to the degree.

Unfortunately, degrees and experience must be in a field in which there is a shortage in the target country. Have you gone to the Australian and New Zealand immigration web sites to figure out if you have enough points to qualify?

Between my husband and I, we come up with 175 points for New Zealand which is almost double their minimum but when we look for jobs, we aren't finding alot in our current skillsets. Lecturers are in demand but more for technical jobs than the social sciences. Accountants are in demand but not those that aren't chartered (which I assume is like a CPA in the US.)

Yes, a chartered accountant is a CPA. If you have a nursing qualification from the US or Canada, you will definitely be most welcome.

This makes no sense at all. Your husband has 4 degrees. What was his intent in taking them? Is he just a perpetual student or did he intend to do something with them? Why would he suddenly decide to become a nurse? Is that his life's ambition?

You really need to seek professional advice in my opinion. It's also my opinion that you need to get a grip on reality.

If I was hiring for a job and a guy came in with FOUR degrees, I know what I'd think.

"cannot support us with his advanced degrees overseas."

Could you explain that please? Should he be able to support you and get a good job just because he has advanced degrees?

Why doesn't he train to become a teacher or lecturer?

Thanks for all the "mature" advice.

He is a teacher and a lecturer and a researcher and has several published articles. He uses his degrees. Unfortunately, it seems most other countries aren't interested in professional educators without a PhD. There are lecturing positions available but not in his discipline. I simply asked for advice on whether nursing could provide us a job anywhere we chose to roam, not for insults concerning a good education.
