I'm a 20 year old Canadian girl from Vancouver and I'm planning on moving to Australia in 2009 and i have 2 questions:
1. What Australian city is most like Vancouver in terms of size and the people living there?
2. And what is a website i could use to find a job on?
--All the sites I have found don't really tell me much about the job I will be doing. I just graduated from culinary school and want to work in a nicer restaurant and all I seem to find is fast food joints or greasy spoon type bars.

Thanks for the help.

Every city is unique but you'll find most of the capital cities in Australia not much of a culture shock compared to Vancouver. Sydney and Melbourne both have a population of 4 million and they would be the easiest to find work in. Oh and there are PLENTY of jobs around, especially in nice restaurants - no need to worry about that. They are desperate for workers.

But you're better off organising work after you arrive in Australia as trying to find a job before you come here is always a risk and won't give you an accurate representation of what is available.

How are you dealing with the visa issue?

  1. You'll find most cities in australia fairly similar. But melbourne is the best. There really is no city in Australia close to Melbourne (and no, i don't live there, i live in a different state! - nsw). Sydney you might get stabbed (over-exaguration, but it's possible - sydney is a lot more dangerous than melbourne). Melbourne is also a little cooler, and is much more "European".

A good job website for all of Australis ls:

http://www.careerone.com.au/

Hope that helps ;)

Oddly enough this summer, the temperature in Melbourne is averaging around 30-33C with Sydney at 27-30...

I find Sydney to be quite safe provided you know when and where to go.

Best bet are Melbourne and Sydney. Nice large cities, not very busy (compared to other cities) with jobs and training plentiful.

The best website in Australia for jobs is www.seek.com.au.

As for cities, having lived in Sydney for 10 years it is a ratrace and I couldn't wait to leave. It is expensive, loud, noisy, and pollution is a problem. Melbourne is a bit more 'cultured', a bit more civilised, and slightly cheaper. Why not try another capital city, or even a regional city? I live near Newcastle in NSW, gateway to the Hunter Valley. It's beautiful here, the beaches are pristine, cost of living is considerably lower than Sydney, and there is plenty of work around. It's also only 2 1/2 hours from Sydney so you could always drive down (or catch the train) for a big shopping expedition if you wanted to.

My only question would be - what kind of work visa are you on? You DO HAVE a visa I take it?
