Hi
My name is Zoe and I am from Australia. I am moving to Chang Rai to live for 12 months, I should be arriving in the next month.

I will be working at the International Humanity Foundation Orphanage. I was just wondering if you could offer any suggestions on any items I should definitely bring with me.

Or any advice, my accommodation is provided for me at the orphanage and at this stage I was only planning on bringing the bare minimum of clothes, a couple of pairs of pants, a few shirts, thermals and a jacket. My camera and some toiletries. I am undecided if I should bring a laptop.

Thank you. My email is zoewalshwork@yahoo.com.

A lot of mosquito repellant would be my advice!!! Buy tiger balm when you arrive in Thailand for any bites you may get as I find this to be much better than any cream I have used.

Sounds like a great project you are doing and for such a good cause. I'm going to look into it myself.

Good luck!

It may sound like a silly answer but take a few pairs of earplugs.I take them travelling by default and they make a big difference to my sleep.
If youre gonna be staying in the orphanage itself then you may need them!
You'll have a ball.
Good luck.

....also take anything that the kids will like to play with, use etc.that you can shove into your rucksack.Cheap as.. in the west but they'll love it and a good way to get to know and connect with them.
Also, people are always fascinated to see photos of where you're from and what u get up to in your hometown, your friends, house, family, pet hamster(!) etc.a different world that they would never get to see and they will be able to get more of an idea about what you're about by looking at them.

You are on the right track with your packing - you wont need much there and will be able to buy hot weather clothes very cheaply. If you are intending on trekking etc in your off time, then I suggest you take your footwear with you, along with any other specialist stuff. THere are internet cafes in Chang Rai, but having your own computer can be convenient for using in your room.

Ask the orphanage before packing stuff to use with the children. The director will be able to advise you on what they have and what is needed/wanted. A pile of western toys may not be the most appropriate.
