I decided to make the big move to Arusha, Tanzania and now here, the task of finding employment seems a bit more daunting than I was expecting. I studied political science and human rights at University and have work experience in Marketing and Administrative work. Any advice?
Thanks!

But do you watch CNN? Or check out world news besides mainstream?

  1. Don't worry about gawkabout. Years of being an alcoholic killed a lot of brain cells.

  2. Don't use extraneous apostrophes.

  3. My advice would have been to look for work before you moved there but sounds like it's a bit late for that.

You might want to ask on the Africa branch on the subsection devoted to Tanzania if you haven't already.

Seems pretty silly to me to move halfway around the world without any knowledge of the job situation. What you need is career advice, not travel forum advice.

OTOH since you ask, networking is probably the most common way that people find jobs these days. What do other expats do for a living in Tanzania? Make appointments to talk with anyone who will see you to find out what other people are doing and how they found their jobs.

Look for volunteer opportunities. Sometimes these can be opportunities that turn into paid positions but they are also worthwhile for networking.

Rethink your plans.

With your background, NGOs might be a good place to research. When I was there, the tourist activity was slowed significantly...thus reducing the need for workers. An interesting place to live...not for me...but best of luck. Next time I would find the job first, then make the big move. And don't forget to stock up on your malaria meds...

Update: Day 14 and I have a full time job and an interview for a part time position. Thanks for the advice!
