Hi everyone,

I am interested in people's experiences in working abroad and what type of work is easy to find. I am a 22 year old Australian who has backpacked three RTW trips at 5 months each time in the past 4 years. I have never worked when I travelled as I was always on the move and spent most of my time in Europe, North America and Asia.

However for my next trip I am looking at going over for the long haul and working my way around the world for quite a few years. However I have limited work experience besides retail experience while studying and will have 1 years worth of experience in Marketing by the time I would leave. Which really won't account for much but I am not too concerned about staying in the same career. (the travel bug keeps calling!)

Anyway I was wondering what type of work is the most common for people staying in a country for about 6 months and what would be the easiest countries to get work visas for? I realise places like Canada and the U.K would be the easiest to go over for Australians and find work. But what about non-english speaking countries where your knowledge of the language is quite limited? Are teaching English and working in expat bars the only option for places like China and South America?

Hearing about your experiences would be great

Cheers

DO you have a degree? Then you have the option of looking for teaching work in most Asian countries (South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, etc), without a degree you could still work in some of these places, I'm just not exactly sure which.

OP

As a word of advice, if its not too late, dont leave Aus with one years experience in marketing. Why? Its not enough to show any 'stickability' or real skill set. This will make it harder to find a permanent job in Australia or elsewhere. Many long term backpackers come across interesting opportunities for longish term temp work and projects - these tend to be more interesting and much better paid than waitressing and of more use careerwise than teaching English.

Try to stick to what you are doing for, say, another 18 months to two years and you will give yourself the opportunity for far better employment.
