Hi all. My partner and I are both British Citizens but are also Australian permanent residents and are trying to confirm whether or not we are eligible to live and work in New Zealand? If anyone can let us know exactly where we stand, we would be very grateful. Thanks very much.

Australians can work in NZ without any visa restrictions and vice versa. I think it will be OK for you guys because you have PR which basically means you have the same rights as an Aussie citizen.
Double check it with immigration but i think you can work in NZ without any restrictions

No #1 Australians can work in NZ that is correct, but PR is just a status allowing you to work in Oz - so you need to enter NZ on an Australian passport - so you need to become citizens - so you will have to do the stupid test they have introduced but so long as you have been in Oz long enough to be citizens you won't have a problem. And UK recognizes dual citizenship so you wont loose your UK passports either.

IF you dont qualify for citizenship yet then you have to get a working visa either because you are young or because you have an in demand skill set - if you have managed this with Australia then NZ shouldn't be a problem - NZ is generally seen as being easier to get into than Oz - and is more often used as the stepping stone to Oz.

Thanks everyone. Its been quite confusing tyring to find out whether or not this is possible. We might give it a go and if all fails, Oz is not far away.

Hi there,

Number 4. is correct.

However you must hold either a "Permanent Resident Returning Visas" or "Permanent Migrant Returning Visa". It may be best to just give Immigration NZ a call. They have a number for people in Australia 02 9223 0144, and are open from 7am-7pm NZ time. These calls are handled by Immigration offcers in NZ, or if you are in Sydney, possibly pop down to the Sydney Branch on Hunter Street if you are in Sydney.

Hope it all goes well.
