Hi everyone,

In true backpacker style, I am planning on going to Australia (hopefully as soon as possible!) with extremely limited funds. I recently got my Working Holiday visa & got all the RSA certifications I could get online. Being that I won't have much cash on me, I would really rather not go to Australia without a job, since it is so expensive there (I will probably just have enough money to last a week of not working). I'm not sure if anyone has had any experience with applying for jobs online before getting there... but, if you do, please share!

I am happy to work in hospitality, farm work, anything really.

Thanks :)

An Aussie told me, "There's no disgrace in poverty. Its just such a damned inconvenience."

I love it!

Be aware of a common scam in Aussie restaurants, esp in Sydney, around the Manly area where they ask you to work for nothing for a "trial" . Don't you have to show proof of funds?

Hey

My boyfriend and I arrived in Australia 3 weeks ago, here are a few tips:

  • Your online RSA certificate will work in every state except NSW, so if you want to use that for immediate work when you arrive then you won't be able to fly into Sydney (I don't know where you are flying to)
  • We've been here 3 weeks and haven't managed to find a job so far, although until a few days ago we were quite lazy about it
  • The terms of your Working Holiday Visa state that you need £3000 and a return ticket home or £5000 and no ticket before you're allowed in the country. Although they didn't check our statements, I wouldn't risk it!
  • Yes Australia is expensive, but you need to be smart about what you do etc so that you don't spend an absolute fortune when you arrive and don't have any income
  • I would probably recommend having a few contacts that you can go to for a job when you arrive, but not necessarily start work the day after you get here. Enjoy it for a few weeks!

If there are any other questions, just let me know :)

I just finished my year in AUS. I found out the way to make money was to work at a resort in the outback or another place that provides lodging and food.

The one we worked was in the flinders ranges. They provided all the food, free wifi, and lodging for $104 per week. It paid $23 per hour and we got 50-60 hours per week. Yup, after 5 months we had well over 12,000, plus we still got most of our taxes back. And we met real australians.

Apply to outback resorts. There are hundreds all over the country and most will hire backpackers for the tourist season.

Good luck!

I'd suggest you post this on Australia Branch.

"I will probably just have enough money to last a week of not working"

Well, even ignoring the proof of funds required as covered above, arriving with only enough money to live on for a week is ridiculous. But you don't get to ignore the proof of funds requirement anyway. So how do you plan to meet that requirement?

As for finding a job before you go, good luck. You have said nothing about your experience/skills/profession other than mentioning RSA. I will guess you mean in regards to bar work. RSA is a common set of initials that could refer to all kinds of other things as a Google search would show you. If you are referring to bar work, how much experience do you already have?

There is possible and there is probable. What you want to do is get into the probable category, as it is you aren't even into the possible category if you can't come up with proof of funds.

OP, just sell your car. Go to Australia for as long as it takes.
Its an investment in yourself. Learn life styles and life skills there.

You'll be as greatful as I am.

I met a woman who extended her visa. She told oz immigration, she was in the middle of a big business deal with locals. "If I don't compleat getting this started, we both lose."
It worked once.

theres thousands of backpackers like yourself looking for jobs in australia, and those who are already there have an obvious advantage over you. just go as the best way to get a job is to be there...and as mentioned above, dont do trial jobs at bars and cafes without getting paid. if you work, you are supposed to get paid - period.id be weary of saying youll do anything cause not all jobs are that great and quite a few employers will try to pull a fast one on yah if you aint careful. being very eager to work hard + having no knowledge of australian workers rights = employers dream in some towns. alice springs is a good place to find work cause no one seems to stay there very long and theres less competition than in the big cities. have fun on your trip.

You can register with agencies before you arrive, but most employers will want to meet you before they take you on, so it's very unlikely that you'll get a job lined up in advance.

I'd suggest saving more money so that you can at least support yourself for a few weeks. I know someone who has been here since January and has only just got a full-time job. He's been working part-time, but wasn't really making enough to live on.
