So I know that it's illegal to work in Europe without a permit/visa, but I was wondering if it was done anyway. I've done lots of different farm jobs and will be in Spain/France during the fall, so I figured there should be fruit harvesting and other things to do. Any non-EU nationals have any recent experience with this? Any advice on where/how to find work?

ach, such tart disencouragements! my bubble has now been suitably burst.
in the United States there are seasonal opportunities for people from anywhere to make enough money to fund travels and possibly save up, even with our population of fine latino migrant workers of dubious legality who come from places where a dollar will buy you a nice dinner. But we're a rough and tumble people, day labor is a part of our national character.
I guess I imagine there still are such opportunities in Europe, but this is probably not the forum to find said opportunities. I figured it was worth a shot.
You can look at the wwoof website but be aware that there are other problems in Europe. In particular, there is the Schengen zone, a group of twentyfive countries which you as a US passport holder can enter visa free but in which you can remain for only 90 days in a 180 day period. This makes it hard to do things like wwoof, workaway, help exchange, etc.
