Does anyone have experience trying to find jobs for two people in a foreign city? My husband and I would like to live and work overseas for a year or so, starting this fall or as soon as possible. I have experience teaching English as a second language both in the US and overseas, but he does not. We're open to more or less any kind of job and fairly flexible as to where we go, but we've been thinking about South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Vietnam kind of area.
Thanks for any advice or tips.

Does your husband have a degree? Is your goal to make money or experience living overseas? Is your husband willing to teach ESL even without experience?
Lots of people go overseas together. In a large city you might not even work at the same place.
I am pretty sure that South Korea and Japan require college degrees. Other countries you mention might or might not but you will probably make more money in either of these two.
I would check the sticky message at the top of the NEAsia branch for information about China and S. Korea, ask on the other appropriate branches, look online at places like Dave's ESL cafe, Thaivisa.com, etc.

everbrite,
Thanks for the tips. My husband does have a degree, in Foreign Languages/International Studies and is willing to teach English without experience if he can find a place. Our goal is really to experience living overseas in a more or less self-supporting way. Another option is for him to go to univeristy somewhere overseas since that is in the plans for us anyway. By now we may be too late for that for this fall, though.

Your plans are easy to work out. Shoot for Korea is you would each like to save about US$10-12,000 per year - or head to Thailand if you just want to enjoy life- but save nothing.
Since both of you have degrees, you should be able to make money in addition to paying your expenses assuming that both of you work. If you work and your hisband attends school, then you might break even depending upon the cost of his schooling and where you decide to go.
I suspect that you will find that you can make the most money in S. korea or Japan and less money elsewhere and as noted above perhaps little to nothing in Thailand.
One of the best websites to look at is Dave's ESL cafe. Look there for information about companies, about places, about income, about things to ask for in your contract.
I am not so certain that it is too late. Many companies seem to hire all year. Some people do back out at the last minute.
If you are interested in South Korea, China or Japan, try posting something on the NEAsia branch. There are lots of ESL teachers on that branch. Some with experience teach at the university level.
BTW assuming that you are a licensed teacher in the US and that you don't insist upon going this fall, you might make considerably more money teaching at an international school. Many of them hire some ESL teachers. They usually require teaching credentials and experience which you have but most people here on the TT don't. You might try looking at the tieonline, teachabroad, international school services, etc.

I am sure many people work in Korea and 'enjoy life' just as they would in Thailand, particularly as a couple.
Don't be put off a place by one person's opinion.
No, it's not too late (as long as you have your U.S. passports). And, yes, S. Korea can be enjoyable:)
I second looking looking at Dave's ESL Cafe
You can do a search on the Korean Job Board for couples; there are schools hiring now for August/September starts . . .
Also, as suggested post on the NE Asia/South Korea branch, as you might get lucky and find a teacher to help you out. I'm returning to S. Korea next week for a 3rd year as a private school (hagwon) teacher; if you have any questions in the next few days send me a PM . . .

I don't know why South Korea has such a bad rep on here. I lived there for over two years and loved it. My girlfriend loved it too. Made loads of money, drank and ate out all the time, met great people.
Yeah, I know there are some businesses that try to screw you and cabbies that take you for rides, but where doesn't that happen?
Don't work in a hagwan though! I did my first year and it was ok, second year worked privates and in an elementary school. 15 hours a week for over $2000.00 USD a month plus the privates. Easy living...
