I'm an ESL teacher with 9 years experience (mostly private classes) teaching in and out of my country. I'm currently in Mexico City but need to get out of this crazy, zany place. I'm looking for a non-English speaking country for my next venture, but one which has lax rules about entering and staying. I've read about Cambodia and am wondering what other countries are easy to get into and stay (minimum 6 months with no problems) with a tourist visa or a work/business visa which equals the tourist visa (no employment proof needed). I'm American if it makes a difference. Thanks!

I'm looking for a non-English speaking country for my next venture . . .

You don't mention your venture or type of venture. I understand that you may not wish to be specific, but that bit of information might help people give you better recommendations.

For non-specific activity and a place to stay with minimum hassle: Yes, Cambodia.

zzark I think it is pretty obvious from the OP that they want to teach English.

Georgia allows most western Nationalities(including Americans) stays of 360 days without a visa. The ESL industry is in it's infancy there. Salaries are exceptionally low ($200-$400/month).

Most teachers in Costa Rica are there illegally, doing border runs every couple months. And, of course, the aforementioned Cambodia.

You are right - I was spacing out . . .

Chile

  • if working illegally can extend tourist visa 90 days in-country once every cycle or make an easy border run
  • if working legally can easily apply for a visa inside the country

Yes, I meant teaching English. Don't worry, I space sometimes too. ;) I've ruled out Cambodia after doing extensive research because the capital would be the only place where I could make money and it sounds like Mexico City on steroids in the wild west.
Not interested in staying in Latin America, thus Chile isn't an option.

Georgia was mentioned on another forum. I'll look into it.

Sudan. Plenty of schools crying out for native speakers, some are of a high quality, some pay ok but financially abuse the students. 6 month contract (legal) is commonplace.

What's wrong with Sudan? Or are you using CNN as your travel information source?
