How/what would you say/do to convince your employers to allow you to telecommute overseas?

I've been working in internet marketing for over 1 year now, and part of my job can be done any where in the world as long as I have computer and internet access. No one supervises me at my workplace, and people don't exactly know what I do for our client any way - not even my direct Manager. In the job ad it did say that you have the ability to work from home.

I can't really take a pay cut because I get paid really low, which totally sucks - but I've calculated that working 4-5 hours per day on my client's work is enough to keep me afloat without worries in the countries I do want to telecommute from.

Why talk to your employer at all. Talk to your client. If your client says they will be happy with you delivering your product to them from wherever, your employer has nothing to think about. It's called a fait accompli.

How often do you have face to face meetings with your clients and / or your employer? That is the crucial thing but I suspect few employers would allow this even with the carrot of lower pay.

To be blunt if I was your manager I would probably not be too happy with the proposal, and I am a remote worker!

Have you considered time zones as well?

Anyway if you are in Internet Marketing why don't you start your own business or at least create some websites? As you know having the marketing skills is half the battle in terms of making money from websites.

Then you can work from anywhere, and if you are good at it which I suspect you are, then you would probably make more money than working for someone else. That's what happened to me and I just came from a web developer background with no marketing experience.

Good luck anyway with your approach.

I don't have to have face to face meetings with any clients or my employer. With the bit that I'm doing we just communicate by email, MSN and Skype. My bosses rarely come in. Our office is open 24/5, so time zones shouldn't make too much of a difference. Plus I plan to be in a similar if not the same time zone.
