I am very excited to leave Boston and embark on a whole new adventure. I have done fair bit of travel through the years to South America, and all over Europe, but never Africa. I will be living in Hurghada, and will be taking care of two little children, but wanted to know if anyone had any advice on being an Au Pair, and any tips or words to the wise about living in Egypt, with the climate, culture and what not to wear as a woman.

Don't, and it's not just because Hurghada is a dump that would be improved by nuking it. There have been similar posts in the past and the general conclusion has been that there is something dodgy about it.

Care to provide a bit of information about the family you will be au-pairing for and why they want an American au-pair to do the job when they can get well educated people to do the same job for pennies.

If you've seen and experienced the standard of care which is deemed normal by an Egyptian au pair then it is understandable why you would want a foreign one. Usually Philippino though.

Interesting that an Egyptian family should want an American au pair. Maybe they want their children to be exposed to an American accent. But, I'd be wary of possible strings attached and go with caution. Who hired you? And, have you spoken with the mother. I spent one night to Hurghada while in transit to somewhere else. It didn't impress me as the kind of place I'd want to stay in for more than a day.

The plain and simple fact is that if an Egyptian family can afford it, then they don't want an Egyptian nanny for a number of reasons.
The OP hasn't said whether the family is Egyptian or a mix of nationalities, or expats.

It's not always true, but Egyptian nannies, and staff in general, are deemed to be unreliable.
Status plays a part in the situation as well, the status of the employers is raised by employing a westerner, if they are Egyptian.
Also you get what you pay for. But if you pay an Egyptian nanny westerners wages, you don't get western standards of child care.
