We certainly don't call them eyeglasses, that might be misunderstood to mean a small telescope. The most common word is glasses. Specs is a common colloquialism too, hence one of the leading chains of retailers is called Specsavers. Thus spectacles is also in use, if you don't wish to be colloquial, and mainly if glasses would be unclear (confusion with drinking vessels, etc) and in formal writing.

I'm told this is the title of a French children's book but I think someone's pulling my leg.

The writer of this piece is Jewish. The readership will be mixed. The context is "a Gentile-sounding Romanian name". Not sure about the capital letter either. Thanks!

On a recent triy to Myanmar I ran out of mosquito repellent and a fellow traveller suggested I apply Tiger Balm (this stuff actually helped immediately, much better than the expensive repellent I had bought).

So I got myself a small tub of that stuff, opened the box and read the package insert.

Then, when I read the list…

In the TLS of 19 July,, Toby Lichtig writes that "even to the most godless of Jews, there is a certain sartorial kinship to be felt in Stamford Hil in winter. From shtreimel+ to +shtivel , the street fashions in London's Hasidic heartland bespeak stateliness and warmth."

I know what a shtreyml is, the fur hat worn on the Sabbath by Hasidic men of a certain status, sometimes almost as big as a bass drum.

What's a shtivel? Google isn't helping much.

This is a bit of a stupid post, but it has always occured to me that people, especially non-native English speakers, always know how Yosemite is pronounced, but less often Arkansas (perhaps because Yosemite is known all over the world, whereas Arkansas is less known to people).

I personally always thought that Yosemite was pronounced like 'Jo's vegemite (without the vege)' until I heard some pronounce it as it is supposed to be.

I also always wondered if anyone else ever thought Yosemite was…

I can't think of anywhere else to ask about this film, and as you will soon see I have only a tiny bit of information to give you:

I remember only one tiny scene from the film. A blind man in dark glasses is standing on the sidewalk with his begging cup, a sign hanging from his neck that says AVEUGLE.

Suddenly, it begins to pour rain, and pedestrians scurry up the steps of a public building of some sort to get shelter under its portico. Among them now is the blind man, who lifted his glasses…
