Hola Amigos

Me llamo Sarah, soy de Inglaterra. Me gustaría practicar mi español con alguien que quiera practicar Inglés.

I have Skype so can video chat with anyone in the world, but the reason Im learning is because from November I will start travelling through Central and South America, so would love to chat to anyone from Latin America :)

Unfortunately my Spanish is very basic as I havent been learning long so it would help if I was speaking with someone who had an understanding of English.

What is the Arabic root of the Turkish word 'makam', 'place of work, position'?
Do Persian and Urdu have a cognate, also from the Arabic root I suppose ?

Not sure at all, but it might be a modification of Walsche/Welsche, which is still a derogatory term for Italians used by German speakers in the South Tyrol area - in opposition to true Germans (Walser) and Slavs (Windisch).

The word ending with -er should be plural. It's very hard to convey its meaning in…

Trying again as my original message didn't come through.

Recently, while in Cefalu, Sicily I found a Latin inscription up on a wall near an ancient washing place.

D.O.M.
HAC CEPHALINUS
ABIT QUOCUNQUE
SALVBROR AMNE (not sure about the B, could be something else)
PURIOR ARGENTO
FRIGIDIORQUE…

linguistically rather than hygienically (that's not a real word is it?) do you wash, clean or brush your teeth? Last week I mentioned I had to go and "wash" my teeth and was told it should be "brush". Last night my brother mentioned he was off to "wash" his teeth before heading to bed.
Is it incorrect, a regional variation or maybe just a family thing?

Is Bo Xilai's given name the same as the Chee Lai in The Song of the Volunteers, sung there (in Chinese of unknown-to-me quality) by Paul Robeson? I understand his father was a high-ranking party functionary; I can imagine such a person naming his son Arise.

It's for the guy who puts and repairs stores, shutters and all sorts of screens in houses and public areas.
In French the job is called: monteur en stores.
Thanks.

but in Israel his name has become a metaphor for mistranslation ever since someone translated it literally in the subtitles of a TV show.
So now it's "Will someone tell me whether I'm interpreting this right and save me from committing a Christian slater?"
