The word "malus" is quite recent in France, having been invented by automobile insurance companies in 1970. It is the opposite of "bonus" and refers to the increased rates that you pay if you are responsible for accidents. (The rates go down year after year if you make no claims, so people talk about their 20% or 30% or 50% bonus all the time. People tend not to talk about their malus.)

Do any other languages have a word that is the opposite of "bonus" (of course, I mean other than "penalty")?

I often hear "I'm good" but shouldn't it be "I'm well"?

...ye take a part of two words to make another one (real) word.

Say, one takes the 'snip' of snippet and the 'ella' of novella and conjoin tae arrive at 'snipella'?

In the phrase: "essere statisticamente improbabile in una direzione specificata senza l'aiuto del senno di poi"

What is the meaning of "senno di poi". My dictionary is useless for this but the context tells me it means "in a desired direction" or "following an objective", is that right?

Thanks

This is not as earnest as most questions here, but why do they call it "news" on TV and radio?

Shouldn't they call it "Bad News?"

It pretty much all they broadcast.

So the announcer's voice should intone "And now for the Bad News at Six."

or, "Stay tuned for FOX Bad News"

or, "In the Bad News today two armed gunmen (is there another kind of gunman?) slay the neighbour's dog. Bad details at eleven."

Just wondering.

Just something I recently noticed.....

When someone sneezes, in German, you say "Gesundheit" (health.)

In French and Spanish, you use "Salut!" or "Salud!" before drinking alcohol. Does anyone know a rhyme or reason for this?

Recently I was in Vietnam (Lao Cai) for my work. I held a speech for local chieftains from the CP, and behind me, on a huge banner, was written the text:

CHUONG TRINH PHAU THUAT NHAN DAO
CHO TRE EN KHUYET TAT TIND LAO CAI TU NGAY 17/6 DEN 23/6/2007

Of course I understand the gist of it, but could I get the exact translation, please?

Can someone give me a rough idea of how to say "Hello grandma" and "Hello grandad" in Hebrew please. Just need to say it over the phone, not worried about writing it.
