I recently had the pleasure of making a (very) quick trip to Helsinki. While I was in a shop (it was probably Stockmann), I noticed that the staff all had little flags on their name badges to indicate which languages they could speak. Nothing new there, it's quite common practice. Obviously a British flag indicated knowledge of English, French flag French and so on. But then I wondered about the Finnish flag which the staff were wearing.

Finally, I figured it out and it does not involve arcane HTML. The TT4 software interprets square brackets [ and ] as tags for a link, so if you post something in brackets, the brackets disappear and your words show up on blue, as a link to the Thorntree main page. So you cannot post that "Thronetree [sic] is my favorite web site."
Ah, but you can. Put a backslash () in front of each bracket. It works for <strong>asterisks</strong> as well.
I've had assistance from a colleague in Spain. I originally wrote to her in English, but her reply was in Spanish. Of all the bizarre things I've ever run across on the internet, a neo-Nazi, anti-immgirant website in the U.S. has to take the cake. Besides the usual craziness, it has a Spanish language section (for those immigrants they hate?). The Nazis are also supporting a presidential candidate and ... in the U.S., that means asking people to donate money to his campaign. I wanted to write a small piece about this, and wanted to use the common English expression, "A fool and his money are soon parted"…
