Hey all,

I am moving to St. Petersburg in January, and would like to purchase an electronic English-Russian translator. After searching for hours, I have still not found a model which fits my needs, so I was hoping that someone on the TT could help me out.

I am looking for a translator designed for native English speakers, NOT for Russians. This means that Russian words should be displayed with gender, stressed syllable and inflections/irregularity. Ectaco only has one model for non-Russian…

Hi Andrew, it seems to have happened to a lot of people. I think it was people who hadn't logged in for x days before the migration. No idea what x equals, though. A lot of other people were assigned to Uganda for some reason.

We'll always be able to tell if it's the real you here on SiT...Georgian is a Romance language, right? :-)

As we approach December 12th, the feast day for Our Lady of Guadalupe, I've been thinking about the song "las mananitas." Does anyone know the history of the song? How long has it been sung, where did it originate, and why the specific reference to King David? I've tried googling and am giving up. Thanks to anyone who can help!

If you aren't familiar with the song, it's lovely:

"Estas son las mananitas, que cantaba el Rey David.

Hoy por ser dia de tu santo, te las cantamos a ti.

Hey Guys and Gals,
I would like to be able to teach English while I travel for extra income. I have found a school in Prague that offers a 4 week course to teach you in class direction and gives a certificate. The advantage is, they have a worldwide network and a job placement assistance program geared for the traveler.

My questions are these; Are you familiar with this school? Do I have other options? Must I be certified? Is there any kind of school like this in NY?
Thanks,
Fulano

Hello
This is not really a question of grammar, but I need to know the name of something. Possibly an Argentinian with some general history knowledge could help me out...
I saw this sculpture, done in modern concrete, on the front of an archaeological museum in La Paz, Bolivia. I am trying to identify the original design, so far withourt success. One book says it was a copper-bronze disc made by the Incas or pre-Incas and was found near Cobres in North west Argentina, but nothing more. If I could…

Research shows that Turkish as spoken by Turks in the Netherlands is diverging from Turkish as spoken in Turkey. ( Source in Dutch.) The gist: the study was focused on spoken language. They found that under influence of the Dutch language the local version of Turkish is changing. Not by individual speakers who start to make mistakes for lack of contact with Turkey, but uniformly in the whole group. Over the past 40 years it has in fact changed enough that a Turk in Turkey can apparently…

What could be a good German word to translate the word "abusive"? My dictionary only says "to become abusive" = "auffällig werden" which is not really what I think it is.
For instance an abusive relationship is not a "auffällige Beziehung" neither do I think an abusive Charakter is a "auffälliger Charakter". Any ideas?
