I don't have any references handy, but I always thought that mademoiselle+ was abbreviated +Mlle -- upper-case M, no period.

However, in looking through an early version of Tolstoy's "War and Peace," whole paragraphs of which are in French, I see the French companion of Princess Marya Bolkonskaya referred to as m-lle Bourienne.

Was that hyphen a correct usage in Tolstoy's time?

Do you think it's a waste of time? Say if you just want to be able to find your way around a tourist site, buy a ticket etc, i.e. basically for travel purposes, do you think attempting to learn a language just by using a phrasebook is ineffective?

I mean, you maybe able to read out/memorise a phrase or two, but the reply could be mind-boggling.

What's your take on the method?

I was playing around with sound recorder (Programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder on Windows) and discovered that you can also play what you have recorded in reverse (a dropdown from 'effects'). Two things struck me, How surprisingly unintelligible my speech was when played backwards (even a basic phrase like 'good morning'). Secondly, although unintelligble, it was unmistakably me. ...difference in nuance between

humility

and

humbleness?

I recently encountered "humbleness" in a translation of "The Brothers Karamazov" and thought it was a mistake. But it's in the dictionary. So is it exactly the same as "humility", the word I always thought was the only noun form of "humble"?

Hebrew speakers or others who might know,

Does there exist an equivalent of this (the lawyer's prayer) for judges?

(My Googling yielded nothing except a suspicion that the lawyer's prayer is also fit for use by judges, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong.)
