The vocabulary game shilgia first linked to some years back is still up there, for those who like to play games (and mete out charity in increments of ten grains of rice). It has gotten rather tougher, too. There are several new games on the same site, testing geography, (simple) math, other languages and even the ability to recognize paintings. Enjoy!

It's rare for me to do anything before I have my morning coffee, but I just donated 4000 grains of rice by matching paintings with the artists who created them. Thanks!

Hey, you bet. Between the two of us, we've filled many a bowl today.

And another one. Thanks for posting, chris. The version with the paintings is great.

The paintings one is challenging for me. I have yet to crack level 7 for more than a single "turn."

I note with some sadness that a little research indicates there are tens of thousands of grains of rice in a kilo...

Yes, I really think this has to go into the category of "one more way to waste time on the internet" with grains of rice thing just a cosmetic device to make it seem like you're not actually wasting time.

Or to make it seem as though those advertisers are actually being particularly generous. I don't mind wasting the time--it's fun and arguably educational, after all.

Nevertheless, if the site's totals page is to be believed, they seem to raise tens of thousands of kilos every month, and the wikipedia entry indicates the site generates enough to feed about 7,000 people every day. For those who do not have enough time to waste, the wikipedia entry also has a short introduction to "ricebots" that will do the trick automatically.

I was an editor in real life, but this time around I chose the paintings and did extremely well, getting up to level 10. Fortunately I have a good memory, and a course in art that I took many years ago paid off. I wondered if anyone really would benefit from my playing the game, and I'm glad to hear that even if my 4000 grains don't add up to a hill of beans they will be real.

Yesterday I played the English vocabulary section, which was the first to turn up. So many words that I had never heard of -- but I have a reasonably good memory, so when the words came round again I remembered the meaning.

I also tried the geography country naming and the paintings and did pretty well on both.

Next I'll try the French! =D
