#19 -- I don't understand what you mean by "that 'White terminology'". Or "there." (Russia or the Caucasus?)

What are the areas of the US where you think Puerto Ricans are generally despised or feared? By whom?

Nor do I understand in what sense Caucasians are the functional equivalents of Puerto Ricans.

My guess: the poster is a HUGE West Side Story fan who actually lives in Malaysia.

I've never been confronted with this choice in Europe.

"Caucasian" is a term used in research journals. I'm not sure but I think that it's suggested by the American Psychological Association Style Guide, which does not allow the use of "white".

Back in the 1960s, we had a big atlas at home. Besides maps of the world, there were also sections on geography and I remember pages on races of the world. That is where I first learned the word "Caucasian". As I recall, the pictures were in black and white, but by features, etc, the heads used to illustrate each race showed what we would call white people as Caucasian.

Needless to say, the word didn't often come up anywhere else. I don't remember what the other races were called, but I suppose the atlas must have been American or Canadian.

#24 - If I remember correctly, the races are Caucasian (white), Mongoloid (yellow), Negroid (black) and Semitic (brown).

I never though of Roman Catholic as a WASP terminology. In Spanish, Catolico Apostolico Romano is the common term (although most people would just say Catolico in casual conversation just to shorten the term). This is to distinguish Catholics who follow the Roman rite from other Catholics who follow Eastern rites, but who are also Catholics because their churches are in communion with the Pope in Rome (like Maronites, Armenians, etc).

What I personally find puzzling in US forms is "Hispanic/Latino of any race" so if you are a Mexican or Argentinean Jew of Ashkenazim origin, or a Spaniard or a black Colombian, what should you check? I guess it would be Hispanic/Latino of any race, but then that profiling would be based on culture/language, not on ethnicity. What about Spanish Basques?

ah, the use of 'Caucasian' is one of my pet peeves. I is mostly used by USAnians, but I have also come across it in Singapore. Source of much confusion on the Eastern Europe branch when Americans want to know how dangerous Moscow is for a 'caucasian'.

When I got married to my American wife in the US we had to fill out our marriage papers and tick a box for our 'race'. I am a white Northern-European. I believe I could choose from 'caucasian, African-american, Native american & pacific islander, Hispanic, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Oriental, other'.

I refused to tick Caucasian, as I am not from the Caucasus and I don't look like a Chechen, Georgian, Armenian, etc. I also was confused about why hispanic, mexican and puerto rican were different categories (by that rationale there should be separate categories for , say, germans and Italians as well).

The civil servant asked me what category I wanted to choose, and i said I was unsure. She then suggested 'Oriental' (I am not making this up- and hey, Europe IS to the east of the US). She never even considered Caucasian because I am not American (apparently this only applies to US citizens and not to 'foreigners'). I finally opted for 'Other'. As my wife is a WASP, our marriage will show up in statistics as 'mixed race' even though we are both light-skinned, blond, with almost blue eyes. funny eh?

MTL is extremely informative on the topic, and Russians referring to white foreigners as "Caucasians" might be a condescension.

Moscow and other places can be dangerous for Caucasians, in many cases you wouldn't want to identify yourself that way even if you were.
