Jezekiel seems to be a biblical name.

Vinny, your link does not work.

Jézéquiel, Ezéquiel...sounds biblical (my first thought too), but it may also be the local adaptation of a biblical name...

I'll try again. Link

In case this doesn't work, it was the first thing that came up when I googled Jézéquel famille. It's most common in Finisterre. Also common in Eure and Cotes d'Armor.

There seem to be a lot of Breton names that end in -el (of course I draw a complete blank when I try to think of one) so I don't think we need to look for a Hebrew connection.

With the help of that site: Lannuzel, Kerebel, Guevel, etc.

The Bretons also seem to like first names ending in -el: Gaël, Maël, Gwynaël,etc. indiscriminately male or female.

...and in the rest of France, it makes it hard for us to know if they are male or female!

ach! interesting. i have a friend whose name is gael and who is female. she is not bretonne at all though but burkinabé.
but apparently she had the worst troubles when applying for university in brussels because of her name.
