The Malvinas/Falkland Islands are back in the news. BBC

When I first heard about this, my impression was similar to that of some of the people quoted -- that the government is trying to distract people from other problems, exactly the way the military did in 1982. So Loscar, what do you think? Is this article a reflection of what people are saying?

Oh bjd, Malvinas!!!

People in Argentina think in many different ways on this issue. From what we call "Malvinistas" who think that all it maters in life is Argentina's sovereign over the islands being recognized by everybody in the world. Once that's achieved, the world can come to an end. On the other hand you have people like myself who think that the islands belong to the islanders and if they want to be a part of the UK, who cares?. And then you have all the positions in between.

Now, when you see that we have no military power at all, most people ask themselves what's this rant all about. The British are in the islands and they are trying to see if there's oil there or under the seabed near the islands, how can that be considered a new aggresion towards Argentina?

This government has an incredible lack of credibility, so yes, I'm sure most people think all this is just a way to drive people's attention away from Argentina's real problems.

Damn it, I want to to a photo essay about the Space Invaders mosaics without checking the website, but I keep coming up blank on where a lot of the popular ones are. I really need a few Pac-Mans and a Q*bert if possible.

I see that Google has given US$2 million to the Wikimedia foundation in support of the FOAK.
>the funds will support technical infrastructure to support growing traffic and to help make Wikipedia "easier to use and more accessible."

I figure that translates as "buy a bunch of new servers." This is the first time Google has given them money.

They also announced the results of their 2009 fundraising (from Nov. 2009-Jan.2010). US$ 8 million from "over 230,000 donations" almost twice as many donations as last year. The average donation was US$33.

Maybe Google is trying to get some positive publicity? For a long time, they were seen as a fine, efficient company, then they started with their book digitizing plan and showing how big and powerful they really are. So perhaps they are now trying to show that they are not only in the business to make money.

How is your hummingbird doing, Nutrax? These past few mornings, I have heard birds singing, even when it's still dark. I always figure that by the end of February, you can really tell that spring is coming -- the days are longer and birds are twittering. At least the ones you don't hear as much in winter.

bjd - talking of birds singing before sunrise reminds me of the lovely saying

"Faith is the bird which sings to the dawn while it is yet dark"

Well, I must say I appreciate them more now, at 7 am, than in the summer when they start about 5.

I agree with bjd. Oddly, the birds are not singing today...it's cloudy with some chance of rain right now. Nowhere near as cheery as yesterday's clear sunny day, when they were singing before sunrise.

I'm a little worried about Mrs. Anna. For the last week, we've been invaded by workers who are remodeling a bathroom to make it fully wheelchair accessible for Mr. Nutrax. They are using the garage for storage and prep. I'm afraid the constant coming & going and noise of electric saws & stuff may be too stressful for Mrs. A. I haven't seen her on the nest much. I hope it's just coincidence.
