Today's San Francisco Chronicle has a review of a recent performance of the ballet Coppélia. The headline is "New ballerino jump-starts San Jose's 'Coppélia'" and the reviewer extols the "finest male classical dancing the troupe has produced...This remarkable ballerino is Meng Lu."

I haven't seen "ballerino" before for a male ballet dancer, although The Fount of All Knowledge says "the male equivalent to [ballerina] is danseur+ (French) or +ballerino (Italian)." Apparently, the word is coming back into use, having been popularized by Jessica Simpson ("Are ballerina boys called ballerino's?" )

Well after all what could you use otherwise... 'male ballerina'? Come on...

I think they generally say "dancer" or "ballet dancer". That it's a male is usually obvious from the context.
