Merhaba!
New to this board, I'm a middle-aged speech therapist who got the idea 18 months ago to learn Turkish. I love it! My local university offers 101 and 102; I have taken these twice, sitting in the second time as there was a new instructor and text. But now I want something more, perhaps taking a summer course in Turkey.

I've read about Dilmer and Tomer, but I've also seen ads for a summer 2.5 week program at Fatih University which suggests a reasonable price with room and board included. But I can't find web reports from anyone who has taken this class, only some negative postings about the university's academic freedom, which probably wouldn't affect me directly.

Anyone know anything about this program? Might it be a mistake for me?

I can't help you there, but I think you might enjoy joining this thread Imla yarisi ulu gelenegi (Or, did someone say "Turkish thread"). Participants have varying degrees of fluency and some posts are in English. People use the thread to practice, duscuss thisngs Turkish, and to ask fo rhlep with Turkish.

I'm jealous that you were able to find a university course. No college in my area teaches Turkish--and beleive me, I've looked!

Thanks for the link. It looks like an interesting thread. With a dictionary in hand, I'll have a closer look.

Sorry to hear that there's not a University with a Turkish course nearby. I'm surprised that more schools don't offer it, but perhaps my enthusiasm biases me.

Fatih's campus is quite far out of the city, in Büyükçekmece. It's something to think about, though with the new metrobüs lines, this is less of a problem than before.

I got a chance to visit its campus briefly last summer as part of a tour. I remember the tour bus took quite a long time to reach it, but I think we also took at least one wrong turn on the way. It seemed like there was quite a bit of newer construction around the area.

In terms of the course, I wonder if there's enough going on to fill up the days and nights with class, conversation, and homework, or if I'd want to often get away.

My wife and I attended in 2008, the course was six weeks long then and cost $750. The food and accommodation were very basic and the teaching all in Turkish, our existing knowledge of the language was very limited and we found it very difficult to follow. We didn't have the promised conversation partners and the dormitories were in rather dismal areas. The school was very badly organised, to put it kindly, and the promised tour of Turkey didn't happen.

Despite that we had a great time but we didn't learn much Turkish.

If you really want to learn Turkish spend a couple of weeks in Kuşadası and have two hours of private tution with my teacher every day. She charges 20TL per hour and is the only teacher who's been able to teach me Turkish.
