How can the root of the name Oscar be contested?

(When you ask, why are the Academy Awards referred to as Oscars, you usually get the blank reply).

I mean, the whole thing started within the lifetime of many still here today... and, within the lifetime of those no longer with us but who have been able to be recorded with their stories.

Was/Is it that unimportant that no one really cared? ....Is that the answer?... (not totally acceptable, I must say).

Here's a history of the statuette that tells how it may have come to be referred to as an Oscar.

The derivation of the name is simply, unimportant. Someone came up with a good catch phrase, somehow, for it, and it sold well.

Later Americans will either not care, or come up with something strange...

Which is to say "Thank you, NorthAmerican"?

I believe it's because in an acceptance speech, someone quipped that the statue looked like their uncle Oscar, and the name stuck somehow.

shilgia... Thanks for that prompt. Your interpretation was actually mine after I had written it...(still not a totally acceptable answer, but there you go...) (Thank you, NorthAmerican).
