I recently watched Ocean's 13 and I was surprised by the use of "Nuff said"(sp?) in the film. It was often so emphasized as if the director was trying to say something, make a point, joke, maybe refer to something, a previous film maybe? Does anyone know what it was all about? Maybe knowing the origin of the phrase would help.

Thanks.

This is just a very informal pronunciation of 'enough said'. It's been used as a catchphrase by a number of people, but I couldn't tell you if it has a special significance in this film.

My recollection is that the main characters constantly--and seemingly casually--babble about techniques, people, bits of gadgetry, old stories and so on to one another, all of which are mystifying to the audience. On occasion a character will cap such a discussion as you describe, and the other character understands perfectly what needs to be done/not done/considered, etc. while the audience remains completely in the dark about what is going on (because it's all gobbledygook).

Example:

A: "Hey boss--I was just about to post a question about 'nuff said' on SiT."
B: "You're kidding, right? You really don't wanna do that."
A: "Whyzat?"
B: "Well, Georgie Pernell--remember Georgie Pernell?--anyway, Georgie Pernell was last seen telling someone he was goign to post a question on SiT. That was just before he got the old "Scottish tea cozy" from Big Tony. 'Nuff said?"
A: "'Nuff said!!"

I hope that's relatively clear. It's basically a technique to make utter nonsense seem meaningful to the audience even as we have no idea what has just gone on.

Didn't Hale & Pace use 'Nuff said' as a catchphrase on the '80s show?

And don't forget Linford Christie's "Nuff Respect" 'brand' if thats what it was, i seem to remember clothes and lunchboxes.

Lunchboxes as in actual lunchboxes... not the tabloid joke about Linford.. although i'm sure that must have been subliminally related to what i previously wrote.

Thanks for enlightning me! I've seen Ocean's 13 when we were in Bulgaria but hardly understood any of the babble (yes it was in English). So it wasn't just the apricot brandy. They were really not making much sense.

I do believe that Nuff Said was used a lot in the Marvel comics, in Stan Lee's heyday of the late Sixties.

It's certainly been around for a very long time, but I don't know its origin.
