Hi there,

I´ve just managed to pass 3 of the four parts of the last of the EOI English exams(Escuela Oficial de Idiomas). The missing one is the listening exercise but I still have another chance to do it again in September. I was thinking of spending some weeks in Ireland (mostly due to the cheap flights from an airport nearby) and I wonder which are the best options to improve my listening, oral comprehension, skills once I´m there.

Do you know of any courses, conferences etc I can attend, an excuse to simply "listen to English"? I just don´t want to spend three weeks under minimum conversation situations (eg. give me a ticket, I want a beer etc)

Any help most appreciated

Cheers

Volunteer in a school. Attend religious services. Go to movies. Stay in hostels and socialize with other travelers.

In general, I find that listening to music, radio programs, and watching TV/films in my second language help with aural comprehension. Check out a CD from the library and print out the lyrics; choose the closed captions option while watching a movie. The print + audio combination is helpful.

Is accent a concern, though? Might be something to think about...

Congratulations on passing the majority of the EOI exams, and good luck on the final part.

There is an English-Spanish language exchange session every tuesday evening at 6.00pm in the Dublin Central Library in the ILAC shopping centre between Moore Street, Henry Street and Parnell Street. I believe it usually adjourns to a nearby pub when the library closes at 8.00. Certainly a good way of getting both speaking and listening practice in, and you might well meet someone there who was willing to spend more time in one-on-one language exchanges as well.

There might be something similar in one or more of the suburban public libraries as well, and if there is I am sure you will be able to find information on that in the Ilac Centre library.
