Finally, I figured it out and it does not involve arcane HTML. The TT4 software interprets square brackets [ and ] as tags for a link, so if you post something in brackets, the brackets disappear and your words show up on blue, as a link to the Thorntree main page. So you cannot post that "Thronetree [sic] is my favorite web site."

Ah, but you can. Put a backslash () in front of each bracket. It works for <strong>asterisks</strong> as well.

I'll be happy to learn such things when I want to post again, just as I was happy to learn by accident what the " >> " arrows did when I put them in front of something I wrote just to draw attention to the text.

"when I want to post again"

Kerouac, don't forget that we can look at your profile and find out with one click where you posted and when. 16 posts in the past day. I guess that means that you've really left TT.

Absolutely, shilgia. You will find me on all of the TT4 feedback threads here and not one single reply to any travel question.

I am still replying to travel questions on the other sites.

I really don't get it. Why did they decide to put in this rule and then leave it for us, i.e. Nutrax, to figure it out? Why not, when they introduced all this crap, tell us how to do things under the new system?

The phrase "couldn't be arsed" comes to mind.

Thanks, Nutrax. But even under the old system I could never remember how to make a Turkish dotless i or s-cedilla since I only needed to about once every three or four months (and I stupidly always thought I would remember next time and didn't write it down when DianaHaddad was patient enough to tell me, again). It's unlikely I'll remember this when I need it. Now if there were something -- not an unusable list of FAQs, but an actual well put together user's guide to TT4-- that had told us all this, I would know where to find it when I wanted it.

I have to agree that the "Help" section omits an awful lot. And some of it is wrong.
For example, typing: "This is bold text, and this is italicized text" will appear as "This is bold text, and this is italicized text" once you post the message." [note that the words"bold" and "italic" are not formatted.]

Not only is the sentence rather meaningless, but if you assume it means to use brackets to indicate bold or italic, it's flat out wrong.

Testing, testing,

and >> >> what does this do?

Does this << do anything?

This concludes the test of the TT4 information crawlway. Thank you.

Ah! Now I see.

Did you guys know that you can post a web link just like that now? Previously no web links were allowed.

TT4 V2 is getting better, slowly....
