I am in southern Florida. The other day I heard an older (Florida-born) man use the expression "going Comanche" to describe what I know as "going commando," i.e., going about with an unfurnished basement. Has anyone else heard--or does anyone else use--this variant, or know whether it is the original? The difference in number of hits on google is huge with just 130 for "comanche," many of which do not seem to refer to this practice.

going about with an unfurnished basement

Not an answer but what does that mean?

Not wearing underwear. "There's nothing like an unfurnished basement" is a Bart Simpson line.

I'm in my late forties and never heard that variant - and I live in Florida. Perhaps that's an instance of a mislearned expression (in the same way the people don't always hear lyrics correctly) on the part of the person who used it.

It shows up in the Urban Dictionary as "the female equivalent of going commando." I'd never heard it before, though.

OP said "The other day I heard an older (Florida-born) man

If what Urban Dictionary says is true, then I stand by what I said "that's an instance of a mislearned" or the old guy is having an identity crisis.

Except, #5, the OP doesn't provide sufficient context. We have no idea if the "older man" was talking about himself. He could just as easily have been talking about the fetching woman sitting at the end of the bar.

Thanks. Yes, I saw the Urban Dictionary reference, though in this case the context was that the man (maybe in his late sixties) was talking about yet another man, to whom he had just sold a pair of boxers.
