I guess English isn't your mother tongue, but unless you're a native speaker of a language closely related to either German or French, that won't really matter.
Generally, French is regarded as easier to learn once you have got over the initial pronunciation problems and the problem with "silent letters" etc. The grammar then is quite regular and straight forward.
German is a bastard to learn right from the start, because of the grammar (genders, cases, strange plural forms etc.), and it doesn't really get any better. It is my native language, but I have tought it as a foreign language for a while, and it usually is quite frustrating for the learners.
A while ago I tought at an English-speaking school where French and German were the two foreign language options, and only students from the top-ability groups were even allowed to choose German, while the others "had to" take French or no foreign language at all...

wow i didn't realise Stefo that German was so difficult! I always thought that French was the harder option. I learnt German in Highschool and found it fairly straightforward, but that might have been because i tried to teach myself Czech before i changed to German! Compare Germans 3 Genders to Czechs' 5, and Germans 4 Cases to Czechs 7 lol!
