Deniz is popular with leftists because of Deniz Gezmiş, a leftist executed in the 1970s. Don't be fooled into thinking that "leftists" in Turkey are particularly left by other standards. Many of them are wildly nationalistic at the same time ... The opposition Cumhurriyet Halk Partisi (led by Deniz Baykal, by the way) is part of the Socialist International, which is just about as big of a joke you can get.

I wish I knew more names from the left. "Evren" is one. I'll see if I can come up with some more.

Any leftist children named NazIm, after NazIm Hikmet?

Günaydın Dianacım.

Aah great thinking Vinny ... it didn't even cross my mind. Strangely, it doesn't seem that Nazım ever caught on. Maybe because it's an "old" (ie. Arabic) name?

Thanks boxxla. It was just a passing thought. I've never met a NazIm.

#24, Bişeyler yaparız herhalde. Fakat ne olacak henüz bilmiyorum! Things will probably centre around sitting on a friend's terrace looking out towards Sultanahmet & Eminönü. Maybe there'll be some rakı involved ... who knows?

#25. Nor I.

I thought of some more give-aways: "Hüseyin" and "Ali" (and possibly "Cem" too) are especially favoured by Alevis.

I knew I shouldn't start something I couldn't finish! I'll enjoy slowly piecing through that when I get home though! (2pm, remember, yay) Sounds like a good plan, at least the part that I understood. Which neighborhood do you live in? Have you ever made lokum?

I knew a Nazim who lived in Germany and came from Iran originally. That's as close as I can come.

When I become Turkish, my name will be Nilüfer. I may go by Nilü for short.

Anlarsın, eminim!

I live in Beyoğlu, so right in the middle of things. I never tried my hand at lokum - I think my greatest success so far might have been mercimek köftesi. I like Nilüfer (or shortened to Nil) ...

Hadi görüşürüz ... I'm going to be the baykuş tonight.
