We've just been discussing making a trip to Rajasthan (any trip to India is fine by me!) in the near future.

What's the most widely spoken language and which one is best for independent travellers?
I could brush up my Hindi if that's going to be more useful than English when off the beaten track (is there an unbeaten track in Rajasthan?).

Hindi will do very well in Rajasthan. There are one or two local languages (Mewari, for example), but they are close relatives of Hindi, and use the same alphabet.

Good of you to consider using Hindi, too. I used what little I know on my (admittedly short) trip last November, and people seemed to appreciate it.

There probably is an unbeaten track in Rajasthan, but I didn't have time on my trip to seek it out. (And yet, one heavily visited town I saw, Pushkar, still proved very much worth seeing.) Unfortunately. these days undiscovered places aren't remining undiscovered for long.
