Which is the adjective (or noun?) in English which describes people who appreciate literature, painting, ballet, classical music, caviar, and any other things considered to be refined?

I once knew it, but I forgot.

(Oh, and no... "Culture vultures" is not the word I'm looking for...)

Sophisticated is good, as is cultured also there's urbane or cosmopolitan.

I think cultured or high-brow, connoisseur has an association with food, and urbane is not much used any more.

I don't think connoisseur is food-oriented. I would say that someone is a connoisseur of opera or of ballet or of abstract art. Epicure is defined as "a connoisseur of fine food and drink."

How about "bon vivant"?

The plural of anecdote is not data.

Hm, Roger Federer was described as intelligent and urbane in yesterday's Guardian newspaper.

Sophisticate is a word that has always worried me. It's true meaning is to pervert or corrupt, or to falsify. Does this mean that a sophisticated person is pretentious or superficial?
